Warping in thermoforming

Also called: Warpage, distortion

Warping is dimensional distortion — twist, cup or curl — that appears as the part cools. It comes from uneven cooling and locked-in stresses that release once the part leaves the tool.

Why it happens

  • Uneven or too-fast cooling across the part
  • Releasing the part from the tool before it has set
  • Large flat areas with no stiffening geometry
  • Inconsistent wall thickness cooling at different rates

How to fix & prevent it

  • Cool evenly with temperature-controlled tooling and balanced airflow
  • Hold the part on the tool longer before release
  • Add ribs, curves or crowns to stiffen flat panels
  • Even out wall thickness so the part cools uniformly
