Forming defect

Poor detail definition in thermoforming

Also called: Soft detail, poor pickup

Poor detail definition is when sharp edges, embossed text, logos or fine features form soft and rounded instead of crisp — the sheet is not being pushed fully into the tool detail.

Why it happens

  • Vacuum alone insufficient for fine detail
  • Sheet temperature too low
  • Inadequate venting at detail areas
  • Radii too tight for the process/material

How to fix & prevent it

  • Switch to pressure forming for crisp detail and texture
  • Optimise sheet temperature for replication
  • Add fine vent holes at detailed areas
  • Design radii the process can reproduce
How Indu prevents it: Where a part needs sharp edges, formed-in texture or fine logos, we pressure-form — pressing the sheet into the tool with compressed air for injection-like detail at thermoforming tooling cost.
