Thermoforming for Solar & Renewable Energy Equipment

5 min read

Renewable-energy equipment lives outdoors, scales fast, and needs durable enclosures that don’t corrode. That combination plays directly to thermoforming’s strengths: large, weatherable, corrosion-free parts with low tooling cost and short lead times as a project or product line ramps.

Solar

Solar equipment needs covers and housings that survive years of UV and weather without fading, cracking or rusting:

  • Junction-box and combiner covers — UV-stable, weatherable enclosures.
  • Inverter and power-electronics housings — FR grades where fire performance is specified.
  • Equipment and mounting covers — large protective panels formed without metal tooling cost.

ASA is the natural material for exposed parts — it keeps colour and gloss under prolonged sun where plain ABS would yellow. For fire-rated electrical enclosures, PC-FR (halogen-free, UL 94 V-0, high CTI) is the go-to.

Wind

Wind equipment uses large covers and nacelle-area components where weight and corrosion matter:

  • Turbine and equipment covers — large-format, weatherable, lightweight.
  • Access and inspection panels — formed with integral features, trimmed to datum.

Thermoforming’s large-bed capability makes oversized covers practical without the tooling capital of alternative processes.

Energy storage (BESS)

Battery energy-storage systems demand enclosures that combine fire performance with electrical safety:

  • Module enclosure shells and covers in FR grades (UL 94 V-0).
  • Cell-contacting and high-voltage compartment liners in PC-FR with high CTI for tracking resistance.

These are the same material and process capabilities behind our EV battery work — deep-drawn FR covers and CCS trays — applied to stationary storage.

Why thermoforming fits the sector

  • Weatherable, corrosion-free parts from UV-stable and FR grades we extrude in-house.
  • Large formats on the large thermoforming bed, without metal-tooling cost.
  • Fast, cheap tooling that keeps pace with a scaling product line and absorbs design changes cheaply.
  • Part consolidation — several fabricated pieces become one formed cover.

If you are developing solar, wind or storage equipment and need weatherable, FR-capable enclosures produced quickly as you scale, send us the enclosure requirement — or see our EV & battery components work for the FR and high-CTI capability behind it.
