Sourcing Refrigerator Liners in India: A Local Alternative to Imported HIPS Liners

Search for a refrigerator liner manufacturer and the results are almost entirely Chinese sheet suppliers. For appliance OEMs building in India — or de-risking a China-heavy supply chain — that’s a gap worth closing. Here’s what goes into a refrigerator liner, and what to ask a local supplier.
What a refrigerator liner has to survive
An inner liner looks simple — a deep-drawn white tray — but it lives in one of the harshest environments in the appliance. The polyurethane insulation foamed behind it releases blowing agents (like cyclopentane) that attack ordinary polystyrene, causing environmental stress cracking. The liner also has to hold its dimensions across decades of thermal cycling, meet food-contact regulations, and come out of a very deep draw with usable wall thickness.
That’s why liners are vacuum formed from ESCR-grade HIPS — high-impact polystyrene compounded specifically to resist stress-crack agents — or from ABS on premium cabinets.
The material is the product
Most liner failures trace back to sheet, not forming. Three questions for any liner supplier:
- Is the HIPS genuinely ESCR-grade? Ask for the ESCR test result, not just the word.
- Is it food-contact compliant? FDA 21 CFR 177.1640 or EU 10/2011, with a declaration.
- Who extrudes the sheet? If the former buys sheet, every quality problem becomes a three-way argument. We extrude our own — StellarEx HIPS Cool, an ESCR + FDA grade engineered for exactly this application — so grade control and lot traceability start at the pellet.
Forming deep draws with even walls
A cabinet liner is one of the deepest draws in thermoforming. Plug-assisted forming pre-stretches the sheet so material reaches the corners instead of thinning out — the difference between a liner that survives foaming pressure and one that splits in the field.
