Heavy Gauge Thermoforming in India: Large Plastic Parts Without Injection-Mould Tooling

Search for heavy gauge thermoforming and almost every result is an American company. That’s odd, because India has real heavy gauge capability — and for global OEMs, sourcing large thermoformed parts here carries a serious cost advantage. This post covers what heavy gauge thermoforming is, when to choose it, and what to look for in an Indian supplier.
What is heavy gauge thermoforming?
Heavy gauge (also called thick gauge or cut-sheet) thermoforming forms plastic sheet from roughly 1.5 mm to 12 mm thick into large, structural parts — one part per machine cycle. A heated sheet is clamped over a mould, drawn down by vacuum (with pressure or plug assist where needed), cooled, and then CNC-trimmed to net shape.
It’s the process behind machine covers, equipment enclosures, vehicle panels, refrigerator liners, kiosk fascias, medical device housings and transit interiors — parts that are too large, too low-volume or too fast-moving for injection moulding to make economic sense.
When heavy gauge thermoforming wins
- Large parts. Injection moulding a metre-plus panel demands enormous press tonnage and tooling. Heavy gauge thermoforming handles it routinely — our beds are the largest in India.
- Low-to-medium volumes. From tens to roughly 20,000 parts a year, thermoforming’s soft tooling (10–20% of an injection mould’s cost) usually beats the amortisation maths.
- Speed. Aluminium or epoxy tooling is cut in weeks, not months. First articles in 2–4 weeks is normal.
- Replacing metal or FRP. Thermoformed panels are lighter than sheet metal, never corrode, and carry colour and texture in the material — no painting line. Against hand-laid fibreglass, thermoforming is faster, more repeatable and more consistent.
What to check in an Indian heavy gauge supplier
- Bed size — determines the largest single part they can form without splitting and joining.
- Sheet supply — a former who extrudes their own sheet controls material grade, colour and lead time; one who buys sheet inherits every vendor delay.
- Trimming — 5-axis CNC trimming against datums is what turns a formed shell into an accurate part.
- Documentation — ISO 9001, COA/MTC per lot, and PPAP-level submissions if you’re an automotive or medical OEM.
- FR and specialty grades — UL 94 V-0, ESD and UV-stable materials with certificates, not claims.
